Takbir

The phrase Allahu akbar, God is greatest, in green Kufic script between the stripes. Added in 1991, it was redrawn in 2008 to remove the handwriting of the former regime.

Proportions 2:3. Three horizontal bands, red, white, black (Arab Liberation colours), with the takbir 'Allahu Akbar' ('God is the greatest') in green Kufic script at the centre of the white.

Specific rules — Iraq

• The flag is raised from sunrise to sunset, the inscription readable.
• Its misuse is punishable by law.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
