Soyombo

A column of ideograms invented in the seventeenth century. From the top: fire for growth, sun and moon for the eternal nation, two triangles as arrowheads aimed at enemies, two bars for honesty, and a taijitu of two fish that never close their eyes — vigilance — held between two vertical bars for the strength of a united people.

Construction details

Proportions 1:2. Three equal vertical bands, red, blue, red, with the golden Soyombo at the hoist of the red band. The Soyombo stacks fire, sun, moon, triangles, rectangles and a yin-yang.

Specific rules — Mongolia

• The Soyombo must always appear at the hoist, never inverted.
• It flies on public buildings and at official ceremonies.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
