Crescent and eight-pointed star

The crescent marks Islam, the majority religion. The star's eight points are generally read as the eight Turkic peoples, and are also linked to the eight letters of Azerbaijan in the old Arabic-Persian script.

Construction details

Proportions: 1:2 (width = 2 h). Three equal horizontal bands (1/3 h each): blue on top, red in the middle, green at the bottom. Centred on the red band, a white crescent and an eight-pointed star; the crescent's points face the star. Construction (official sheet) — Crescent: outer disc Ø 3/10 h, cut by a disc Ø 1/4 h offset by 1/30 h. Eight-pointed star: outer Ø 1/6 h, inner Ø 1/12 h. The emblem is centred (about 2/5 h across).

Specific rules — Azerbaijan

• The flag is honoured on 9 November, National Flag Day.
• It is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
