Known as Merkið, the banner. A red cross bordered in blue on white: the white recalls the sea foam and the sky over the islands, while red and blue are drawn from the flags of the other Nordic nations.

Specific rules — Faroe Islands
The territorial flag does not take precedence over the flag of the governing power.
It is honoured on 25 April, flag day.
Common conventions
Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
