Red and white are the heraldic colours of the House of Grimaldi, ruling since 1297.

White, with red, comes from the lozengy Grimaldi arms; these are not natural elements.

Proportions 4:5. Two equal horizontal bands, red on top, white below. Almost identical to Indonesia's flag (different proportions) and the reverse of Poland's.

The national flag is the bicolour; the princely standard (white with the arms) is reserved for the sovereign.
Common conventions
