Nordic cross

The white Christian cross, offset toward the hoist, marks the country's Christian heritage. The Dannebrog is the oldest national flag still in use; legend holds that it fell from the sky during the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219, and its design inspired every other Nordic flag.

Construction details

Proportions 28:37. A red field bearing a white Scandinavian (Nordic) cross whose vertical arm is shifted toward the hoist and whose arms reach the edges; the cross is one seventh of the height. The state version ends in a swallowtail.

Specific rules — Denmark

• 15 June, Valdemar's Day, marks the flag's legendary descent in 1219.
• Notably, the public uses it freely for private parties and birthdays.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
