Crossed keys and tiara

The keys of Saint Peter, gold for the power in heaven and silver for the power on earth, bound by a red cord. Above them the papal tiara, its three crowns standing for the pope's offices as father of princes, ruler of the world and vicar of Christ.

Construction details

Proportions 1:1 (square). Two vertical bands, yellow at the hoist, white at the fly; on the white, the emblem of the Holy See: two crossed keys, one gold and one silver bound by a red cord, surmounted by the papal tiara.

• It flies on state buildings and at official ceremonies.

• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
