Carpet guls

Five carpet medallions in a vertical band, one for each major tribe. Turkmenistan has the most intricate national flag in the world.

Crescent and five stars

The crescent marks Islam and a bright future; the five stars are the five regions of the country and the five human senses.

Olive branches

Added in 1997 beneath the guls, they refer to the country's permanent neutrality, recognised by the United Nations in 1995.

Construction details

Proportions 2:3. A green field with, near the hoist, a vertical claret stripe bearing five carpet motifs (guls) stacked above two crossed olive branches; a white crescent and five white stars appear in the field, on the fly side of the stripe.

Specific rules — Turkmenistan

• The flag is honoured on 27 October, Independence Day.
• It flies on public buildings and at official ceremonies.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
