Coat of arms

A yellow May Star within a wreath of palm and olive, ringed by the words República del Paraguay. Paraguay is the only country whose flag differs on the reverse, which carries the treasury seal — a lion and a Phrygian cap with the motto Paz y Justicia.

Proportions 11:20. Three horizontal bands, red, white, blue. On the obverse, the national coat of arms (a gold star in a wreath); on the reverse, the treasury seal (a lion beneath a Phrygian cap and the motto 'Paz y Justicia').

Specific rules — Paraguay

• The flag is honoured on 14 August, Flag Day.
• It flies on public buildings and at official ceremonies.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
