Five stars

The large star represents the Communist Party; the four smaller ones, turned toward it, stand for the social classes of the original united front — workers, peasants, the urban petty bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie.

Proportions 2:3. A red field bearing, in the upper hoist corner, a large yellow star ringed in an arc by four smaller stars. Each small star points one of its tips toward the centre of the large one. The large star stands for the Communist Party, the four small ones for the people united behind it.

Specific rules — China

• The flag is raised each day at a ceremony on the capital's great square; it is honoured on 1 October, National Day.
• A law fixes its design, colours and uses, with half-mast display for national mourning.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
