Cedar of Lebanon

The cedar is the emblem of Lebanon, cited many times in the Bible as a symbol of holiness, endurance and peace. Its green colour signifies immortality and continuity — the tree is drawn entirely in green, with no brown trunk, as required by the constitution.

Construction details

Proportions 2:3. Three horizontal bands, red, white (double height), red, with a green cedar of Lebanon at the centre of the white, its top and base touching the two red bands.

Specific rules — Lebanon

• The flag is honoured on 22 November, Independence Day.
• The cedar must touch both red bands but never cross into them.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
