National emblem

Four crescents and a sword stylised into the word Allah, the whole forming a tulip — the flower said to grow where a martyr falls. Designed in 1980 by Hamid Nadimi.

Takbir, twenty-two times

Allahu akbar is repeated eleven times along each inner edge of the stripes. The twenty-two repetitions mark the twenty-second day of the eleventh Persian month, the date of the 1979 revolution.

Construction details

Proportions 4:7. Three equal horizontal bands, green, white, red, with the red emblem at the centre of the white: a stylised rendering of the word 'Allah' in the shape of a tulip. Along the edges of the green and red bands, the takbir 'Allahu Akbar' is repeated twenty-two times in white Kufic script.

Specific rules — Iran

• The twenty-two inscriptions refer to 22 Bahman, the date of the revolution's victory.
• The emblem is one seventh of the flag's length.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
