The imperial amazon, found nowhere else on earth, is the national bird. Its purple plumage makes Dominica the only country whose flag carries the colour purple.
The three-banded cross stands for the Trinity and the Christian faith. Yellow evokes sunshine and agriculture, black the fertile soil and African heritage, white the rivers and the purity of aspiration.
The stars encircling the parrot represent the ten parishes of the island, and equality among them.
