Stars

The white stars, cut off at top and bottom to suggest an endless sequence, symbolise Europe and the country's continuity. The design was imposed in 1998 after the constituent peoples failed to agree on a flag.

Construction details

Proportions 1:2. A medium blue field cut by a large yellow right triangle whose hypotenuse runs from the upper hoist corner to the lower fly corner. Along that hypotenuse runs a line of seven white five-pointed stars, completed at top and bottom by two half stars cut off by the edges.

Specific rules — Bosnia and Herzegovina

• The country has no separate civil flag: the same flag serves the state, its institutions and the public.
• The flag was designed to stay neutral between communities; the internal entities have their own flags, distinct from the national one.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
