The classic emblem of Islam. Algerian tradition gives the crescent unusually long horns, said to bring good fortune, while the five points of the star stand for the five pillars of Islam.
Construction details
Proportions: 2:3 (the length is 1.5 times the height). The flag is split into two equal vertical bands: green at the hoist, white at the fly. Star: five-pointed, inscribed in a circle whose radius is 1/8 of the flag's height. It sits entirely on the white field, with two points on the vertical centerline and one point on the horizontal centerline. Crescent: outer circle radius equal to 1/4 of the height, inner circle radius equal to 1/5 of the height; the two points span an arc equal to 5/6 of the outer circumference. The crescent is centered on the flag. Per B. Stora, the three colors originally also evoked the unity of the Maghreb countries.
