White saltire

The diagonal white cross stands for peace, dividing the red of the independence struggle from the green of hope.

Three stars

The three red stars carry a double reading: the national motto Unity, Work, Progress, and the three peoples of Burundi — Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.

Construction details

Proportions 3:5 (2:3 until 1982). A white saltire divides the field into four: red at top and bottom, green at hoist and fly. At the centre, a white disc bears three red six-pointed stars edged in green, arranged in a triangle, one above and two below.

Specific rules — Burundi

• Raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset, it is flown at half-mast during mourning.
• The three stars refer to the national motto 'Unity, Work, Progress'.

Common conventions

• Keep the flag clean and never let it touch the ground.
• Never fly a torn or faded flag — repair or replace it.
• Illuminate the flag if it stays up at night.
• Never use the flag as clothing, packaging or advertising.
• Dispose of a worn flag respectfully, not in the trash.
