The golden frigatebird stands for command of the sea, power and freedom, and for the dance patterns of the islands.
Its seventeen rays are the sixteen Gilbert Islands plus Banaba, and it marks the country's position astride the equator.
The white bands on blue are the Pacific Ocean, and the three island groups: the Gilberts, the Phoenix and the Line Islands.
